One of the tougher hikes in the Park: about 3,800 ft, mostly steep, and six hours round trip. Half of our group did this hike while others chose to hike the Asulkan Valley. We warmed up with a gentle hike through cool cedars near the bottom of the Illecillewaet Valley. Then followed a steep climb through subalpine forest and then several long, but less steep, switchbacks across alpine meadow slopes. Finallly the summit of the rock itself (really a huge rocky knoll) was reached from behind via a steep snow-field. We lunched at the summit overlooking the Illecillewaet Icefield and overlooked by the towering Mt. Sir Donald and lots of clear blue sky.
